Head Men’s Basketball Coach Johnny D. Shelwood Retires From Bishop State After 29 Years!
(MOBILE, Ala., August 3, 2021) - After 29 dedicated years of service to Bishop State Community College Athletics and the Bishop State Men’s Basketball team, head coach Johnny D. Shelwood has announced his retirement from the college.
Coach Shelwood began his Bishop State Men’s Basketball Coaching career in 1992 after an illustrious 26-year career at Toulminville High School, now known as John. L. Leflore High School. Coach Shelwood has amassed over 300 collegiate victories in his 29-year tenure.
In 1993, he was named the Alabama Junior College Coach of the Year. In 1996 and 2016, he was named the Alabama Community College Conference Southern Division Coach of the year. In 1996, he was also tabbed the Birmingham Tip-Off Club “Glen Clem” Junior College Coach of the year. Coach Shelwood was inducted into the Mobile Sports Hall of Fame on April 21, 2016, and inducted into the Alabama Community College Conference Hall of Fame in 2018.
“Coach Shelwood has exemplified great integrity and character within his tenure here at Bishop State,” says Athletic Director and head women’s basketball coach Trent Eager. “He has had a major influence on the program and the lives of many young men with his leadership and guidance during his time. His commitment and dedication to Bishop State have been greatly appreciated and the Bishop State Athletics Department and the entire College is forever grateful to him!”
