Medical oncologist joins USA Health Mitchell Cancer Institute
MOBILE, Ala. (8/19/21) -- The USA Health Mitchell Cancer Institute is expanding its cancer care team with the addition of Pranitha Prodduturvar, M.D., a board-certified medical oncologist who will specialize in the treatment of lung cancer.
“Oncology is a field unlike any other,” she said. “I’ve never seen any other field of medicine where patients trust their physicians more.”
Prodduturvar, an assistant professor of interdisciplinary clinical oncology, recently completed a fellowship in advanced thoracic oncology at the Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education/Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. She returns to the MCI, where she served as chief medical oncology fellow in 2018-19.
Prodduturvar said she was drawn to academic medicine because of its combination of clinical practice, clinical research and education. “That’s the beauty of academic medicine. You put research into practice,” she said. “And I really enjoy teaching.”
Prodduturvar was born in India and earned a bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery degree from the Government Medical College in Nagpur, India. She moved to the United States, where she completed a residency in internal medicine at Presence St. Joseph Hospital in Chicago.
She became interested in oncology after losing family members to cancer. “At the time, I was training in internal medicine,” she said. “I felt like I needed to study medical oncology.”
She then completed a fellowship in palliative care and hospice at the University of Chicago before moving to Mobile to join USA Health’s first class of medical oncology fellows at the MCI.
Prodduturvar is board-certified in medical oncology and is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
She will see patients at the main MCI office in Mobile. For an appointment, call 251-665-8000.
