Mobile Symphony’s Fireworks of Jupiter offers Musical Pyrotechnics on Jan. 22 & 23

The Mobile Symphony Orchestra (MSO) will blast into a new year with the Fireworks of Jupiter, Saturday, Jan. 22, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, Jan. 23, at 2:30 p.m., at Mobile’s historic Saenger Theatre. This exciting concert centers on Mozart’s most brilliant symphonic work, the Jupiter Symphony. Jonathan Swensen, the 25-year-old Danish cellist and rising classical star, joins the orchestra for Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations.

“Mozart’s compositional talent was so effortless, it feels like he was taking dictation directly from some higher source,” says Scott Speck, Music Director of MSO. “In the finale of the Jupiter Symphony, Mozart introduces five distinct melodies one by one — and then, without batting an eye, he combines all five of them together in perfect counterpoint and harmony. It’s absolutely extraordinary, and to play or listen to this piece is to connect with the divine.”

Swensen, who has built an impressive international following, is an accomplished graduate of the Royal Danish Academy of Music currently completing graduate studies at New England Conservatory of Music. Last year, he made a “brash, bold and successful D.C. debut” (A Beast in a Jungle, Washington) at the Kennedy Center.

Four-concert season memberships are $68-$272. Tickets are on sale now for $20-$89. Student tickets are $10. Tickets can be purchased online, by phone at 251-432-2010 or at the symphony box office, 257 Dauphin Street. Through MSO’s Big Red Ticket program, sponsored by the Alabama Power Foundation, students in grades K-12 can attend any of the season’s six classical Sunday performances for free when accompanied by a paying adult (excludes special events like the annual holiday concert). More details can be found online at mobilesymphony.org.

Masks are required for this performance. The MSO will review its COVID-19 safety policies on a concert-by-concert basis, and updates will be posted on the website: mobilesymphony.org.

Sponsors are Volkert, the J.L. Bedsole Foundation and Dick & Betsy Otts.

All concerts have been made possible by grants from the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
