Mobile Symphony goes casual for Beethoven & Blue Jeans, Nov. 9 and 10.

The Mobile Symphony Orchestra (MSO) is dressing down for Beethoven & Blue Jeans, an uplifting classical concert in a laid-back atmosphere, Saturday, Nov. 9, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 10, at 2:30 p.m., at Mobile’s historic Saenger Theatre. Tickets start at $20.

“Our concert explodes into action with Jessie Montgomery’s Starburst, a dynamic and effervescent work that radiates with shimmering textures and rhythmic vitality,” MSO Music Director Scott Speck says. “Next, we delve into Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 94 (“Surprise”), a masterpiece of classical form and high-spirited wit.

“Finally, we bring out not one, not two, but three soloists to perform Ludwig van Beethoven’s rarely-performed Triple Concerto with the orchestra,” Speck adds. “Violinist Benjamin Baker, cellist James Baik, and pianist Chaeyoung Park weave their intricate dialogues together with the grandeur of the MSO.”

Beethoven & Blue Jeans started almost three decades ago to encourage music lovers to attend the symphony in a relaxed atmosphere without any pressure to dress up. Even the orchestra is wearing jeans. Insider tip: Jeans are perfectly acceptable attire at any MSO concert. There is no dress code for enjoying great music!

Guest lecturer David Duff, music director at Alabama Public Radio, will present an informative pre-concert talk before each performance. TakeNote lectures begin at 6:30 p.m. before Saturday classical performances and 1:30 p.m. before Sunday classical performances in Room 1927 adjacent to the Saenger entrance on Joachim Street.

MSO’s next concert is its annual holiday performance, Christmas Around the World, Dec. 14 and 15, 2024, featuring baritone Ricardo José Rivera. The season includes a concert of music from some of the world’s greatest movies, a monumental performance of Handel’s Messiah, popular pianist Charlie Albright and much more.

Tickets are $20-$96 and can be purchased online at mobilesymphony.org, by phone at 251-432-2010 or at the symphony box office, 257 Dauphin Street. Bring a group of 10 or more and receive 20% off your order! Five-concert season memberships are $88-$360.

Student tickets are $10. Through the MSO Big Red Ticket program sponsored by the Alabama Power Foundation and the Figures Foundation, students in grades K-12 can attend any of the season’s six classical Sunday performances free when accompanied by a paying adult. More details can be found online at www.mobilesymphony.org.

Beethoven & Blue Jeans is sponsored by The Daniel Foundation of Alabama and Joanna Cunningham. Alabama Public Radio is the media sponsor. All concerts have been made possible by grants from the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
