Mobile Symphony’s Cinematic Christmas Salutes Holiday Movies, Dec. 10 & 11
The Mobile Symphony Orchestra (MSO) invites holiday concertgoers to Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas with the MSO, Saturday, Dec. 10, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 11, at 2:30 p.m., at Mobile’s historic Saenger Theatre. The orchestra’s annual Christmas concert is a Gulf Coast family tradition, and this year’s performance features beautiful music from popular holiday movies.
A Cinematic Christmas includes White Christmas, Silver Bells, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, March of the Toys, Somewhere in My Memory, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Polar Express and many more movie favorites.
“Three of the songs you’ll hear in our Cinematic Christmas concert are by an Alabama native – the Birmingham-born composer and lyricist Hugh Martin,” says Scott Speck, music director. “None of Martin’s songs are more celebrated than the one made famous by Judy Garland in the film Meet Me in St. Louis – Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.”
This iconic Christmas hit has been recorded by artists from Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald, Doris Day and Bing Crosby to Christina Aguilera, Garth Brooks, Ella Fitzgerald, Whitney Houston, Barry Manilow, Bette Midler and Lou Rawls, and even the rock bands Coldplay, Twisted Sister and The Jackson Five.
Popular vocalist Holly Payne will bring many of the songs to life. Payne launched her musical theater career in a stage revival of Meet Me in St. Louis in the very role made famous on screen by Judy Garland. The MSO concert features three songs from this hit 1944 movie.
As will all MSO Christmas concerts, the performance ends with an epic holiday sing-along, giving
everyone the thrilling experience of singing their favorite songs backed by a full symphony orchestra.
