Mobile Symphony soloist subject of international documentary at Exploreum theater, May 14

The Mobile Symphony ends its season May 18 & 19 with a thrilling performance of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue by Cuban pianist Aldo López-Gavilán. Aldo was an instant hit in Mobile when he opened the MSO season in 2019. His brother, Ilmar, has built a local fan base with his Mobile performances as a violinist with the Harlem Quartet. Now the brothers are the subject of the award-winning documentary Los Hermanos/The Brothers. The film follows the story of the virtuoso siblings as they reunite after their musical journeys separated them for years.

The MSO – in partnership with the Exploreum Science Center, the Hispanic American Business Association of the Gulf Coast and the Society Mobile-La Habana – will present an exclusive screening of the documentary in the Exploreum’s PCI Digital Dome Theater on Tuesday, May 14. Doors open at 5:00 p.m. and the movie will start at 6 p.m. Guests will be able to explore the ¡Cuba! exhibit for approximately an hour before the screening. A light reception will follow the film. Tickets can be purchased through the Exploreum website (exploreum.com) and are $15 in advance and $20 the day of event, if available. There are only 150 seats available.

The New York Times calls this heartwarming documentary about Cuba, music and family “electrifying,” and the Latin Jazz Network describes it as “a story that has to be told.” The film also features Grammy-winning musicians Joshua Bell and the Harlem Quartet.
