Join AARP Alabama, our partners at SBP of Louisiana, the AL Governor’s Office of Volunteer Services, the University of West Alabama, Alabama EMA and Sumter County EMA, and ALVOAD (Alabama Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster) – for a free, 2-day Disaster Resilience Symposium on July 18 and 19. This workshop is designed to help cities and communities create plans to prepare for, manage, and recover from local disasters.
Local governments are key in determining how well their communities manage a disaster, so it’s imperative to have a coordinated plan in place when a disaster strikes at home. SBP, a national disaster recovery and resilience organization based in Louisiana, will lead this symposium and provide guidance throughout this process.
Disaster resilience is the ability of individuals, communities and organizations and governmental entities to bounce back, adapt, transform, and recover from a disaster. Effective resilience requires private–public collaboration that spans jurisdictions, includes multiple agencies, and crosses social, economic, and cultural boundaries. No one person or entity has all the expertise, influence, or resources to build community resilience. It is imperative that local governments build coalitions with community partners to help identify and meet community needs before disaster strikes.
This summit will be held at the University of West Alabama in Livingston, AL, in the Bell Conference Center. A light breakfast and lunch will be provided. Dinner is on your own.

Who: This planning workshop is designed for city and county government leaders, city planners, business community, educational institutions, nonprofits, and faith-based and community-based organizations active in disasters which support disaster preparedness, response and recovery efforts.
