Runway 14/32 Reopening at the Mobile Downtown Airport
MOBILE, Ala. (October 20, 2021) – The longest runway at the Mobile Downtown Airport (BFM) will reopen soon following a 6 month-long rehabilitation project.
The Mobile Airport Authority held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to commemorate the grand reopening of Runway 14/32 Wednesday afternoon.
The Runway has been closed since May 10, 2021, for improvements including:
- Asphalt runway mill and overlay (over 125,000 square yards / 19,000 tons)
- Replacement of the centerline & TDZ lights
- Replacement of the edge lighting
- Remove and replacement of all markings with reflective beads
- 100,000 square yards of pavement grooving
With U.S. Senator Richard Shelby’s support, this $9.1 million project was funded under the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2020 and the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) of 2020.
“This was a vast project that will have a lasting impact on the community and the local economy for years to come,” said Chris Curry, Mobile Airport Authority President. “We are very excited to have this immediate upgrade to our facilities at the Mobile Downtown Airport.”
Aircraft operating at BFM have been directed to use Runway 18/36 while the primary runway was closed. Residents living in close proximity of the Airport can expect a return of typical aircraft activity.
“This investment has significantly improved our infrastructure at the Mobile Downtown Airport,” said Elliot B. Maisel, Chairman of the Mobile Airport Authority. “Not only will our tenants benefit from the rehabilitated runway, but this project will also continue our mission of providing premium air service as we prepare to transition all commercial air service to the Mobile Downtown Airport by summer of 2024.”
“I’d like to congratulate MAA on their milestone today and for their continued efforts to improve the Brookley Aeroplex,” Mayor Sandy Stimpson said. “This project continues to lay the groundwork for relocating Mobile’s passenger air terminal to Brookley, which will give us the ability to expand intermodal capabilities in Mobile and provide citizens with more direct flight options at lower rates.”
For those who would like to see the newly rehabilitated runway in person, the Mobile Airport Authority’s BFM 5K on the Runway and Fun Run is set for Saturday, October 23, at 8 a.m. Registration is still open. There is more information available at www.BFM5K.com.
